Yes. All Occupation and Residence Permits require a trip to Mauritius to complete the application. During this time, the applicant and his/her family will need to complete a permit medical and the main applicant will need to present themselves at the Economic Development Board for a document verification appointment.

Definitely. The Government of Mauritius has made it very easy for main applicants to submit dependent permit applications for their spouse (common law or married), children and parents.

Yes. No application for any long-term permit will be considered without a birth certificate. In addition, the birth certificate will need to be in either French or English, or accompanied by a sworn translation.

However, a Premium Visa can be applied for without a birth certificate.

Unfortunately not. Dependent Permits in Mauritius are considered to be Residence Permits, which allow you to live in Mauritius, but not work in Mauritius. In order to work in Mauritius, a dependent spouse will need to apply for a separate Occupation Permit (Professional, Investor or Self-employed).

The permit medical includes a chest x-ray, a variety of blood tests and a consultation with a GP, and need to be less than 6 months old.

Children under 12 are not required to have the chest x-ray or blood tests, but only need to be signed out by a GP.

Yes. You may switch from a Dependent Permit to another permit, such as a Retirement Permit or Occupation Permit, at any time. However, a full new application will need to be made online, and it should be accompanied by a letter of no objection from the main applicant.

No. There is no longer a cut-off age for dependent children. However, they will need to be wholly dependent on the main applicant, not married, and not engaged in any gainful employment.

The initial application is submitted online via the Economic Development Board’s online portal. The timeline varies based on the type of permit applied for, but usually takes between 4 and 6 weeks. Once an Approval in Principle has been granted by the Joint Committee, the applicant has 90 days to come to Mauritius in person and finalise the application.

No. As long as the main applicant’s permit is valid, (s)he may add his/her dependents at any stage.
